Somebody's gotta keep this place running...

It's been a long, long time since I followed a show which made me wait anxiously for a new episode week after week, and for some reason now that's happening with a show about a genki-girl with pink hair who's going to captain a pirate spaceship.

File this under, "Based On The Previews This Should've Been Terrible."

I'm an unabashed fan, however. I even like the opening theme. What's wrong with me?!?

Not that I expect anyone's still around to read this, mind you. I just thought I'd put this out there, because... seriously. Watch it if you haven't been.

Admit it.  You've reached the point in your life where genki-girl characters with pink hair make a series better, not worse.

As long as they're well-written, you betcha.

Oddly enough, what I like about her is that she mostly is a relatively normal teenaged girl with the usual foibles (though not over-the-top so)... and then, when the crisis hits, she hunkers down and applies her brainpower and THAT'S when her tactical genius comes out. Her leadership skills are part of her natural personality, which completes the package.

Of course this show has never been overly serious in its dramatic tension, and I'm okay with that. As a mostly-fluffy bit of entertainment, it delivers. I can't remember the last time I followed a series and was anxious for the next episode, each and every week. I WANT MORE! NOW!

I really enjoy this show, although I am not sure what to expect but the formula which works for me is:

1.) Strong and complex characters
2.) A story that goes around the bend and back and your not bored to tears
3.) Good music and drawing.

There ya go.

"Once engaged in battle, fight to win. That is the first and cardinal rule of battle. Suppress all human emotions and compassion. Kill whoever stands in your way, even if that be God or Buddha. Only then can one master the essence of the art.

We're almost to the end of the series, and I'm deeply chagrined. Even if they announce a second series it'll be a while before I can count on having this kind of fun again.

It's always time for some piracy, as far as I'm concerned.
